It's lunchtime and I'm eating Oreo (Jad may get annoyed when he learned this, but hey six cookies is already 455 kcal!) It has been a dream - uhm, well, not really, because I can buy Oreo when I was in the Philippines if I just want to. But it was not just something worth spending on. I'm not rich; I'd better save for a book.
So, I had asked Mama to buy lots of it as a 'pasalubong' for our relatives in the Philippines. She just laughed at my 'kindness'. "Meron naman niyan sa Pilipinas. Pagtatawanan lang tayo kapag iyan ang pinadala natin." But I doubt it. Who would be willing to spend for an Oreo when one can buy a Cream-O, a Hansel or a Hi-ro that are much cheaper? People can buy it, but they would think twice.
Or have I just been away too long?
Anyway, speaking of cookies, I have a favorite story of Mama about me that she tells to everyone willing to listen. I was about 4 years old then and we were in a grocery. Being the sweet-tooth I am, I took a Chips Ahoy! and put it in the cart without her knowledge. When we were in the cashier's line, she eventually saw the cookies and was about to pay for it. But then she took out the other items since she had only 'enough' money. So what I did was bring back the Chips Ahoy! in its sacred shelf and took an Oishi instead. Oh, how moved was my mother then that when she received her first salary in Saudi five years after that incident, that's what she first sent for me (and a Chips Ahoy! Double Chocolate at that!) Uh, I wonder if I can still be selfless.
